“Good intelligent footy”, “Some serious talent” – Many Leeds fans gush over youth stars after win

Many Leeds United fans have been reacting on social media after the Under 23s recorded a 2-0 win over Barnsley on Monday.

Carols Corberan’s junior Whites side welcomed Barnsley’s youth offering to Thorp Arch on Monday for their latest Professional Development League fixture, looking to bounce back after losing 7-1 to Derby County in the Premier League Cup last week.

Things started well for Corberan and his team when Barry Douglas sent Liam McCarron down the left channel, from where he whipped a low ball into the box for Edmondson to find the bottom corner with a first-timed right-footed shot.

Pablo Hernandez was one of many United players to have chances to put further distance between us and our Yorkshire rivals, but it fell to Jordan Stevens to claim the honours in the second-half after Barnsley reacted slowly thinking Edmondson would be called offside.

Edmondson had chances of his own, too, but failed to see his shots ripple the net with one blocked on the line, and was often caught offside as he struggled to time his runs beyond the last man.

The teenage centre-forward’s goal was his third for our U23s this season, adding to his 11 in nine Professional Development League appearances last term.

Edmondson has rarely featured for the first-team, though, with Marcelo Bielsa awarding him 16 of his 35 career senior minutes in the Championship, none of which have come in the current campaign.

Will Ryan Edmondson break into the first team this season?

Yes

No

Fans were not just impressed by the England U19 international’s efforts, though, as the work by McCarron to help create his goal and the play by Stevens for his second-half strike caught many supporter’s attention.

Stevens made his first appearance in this season’s Professional Development League on Monday, adding to his six from last term when he scored six goals.
