Good displays by 19 y/o could give Bielsa a lot of headaches in the future – Report

|

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited about the prospect of this happening.

After all, I’ve been saying for some time that the club need to give him a go, but it looks as if we could be seeing him for a lot longer come the end of the season if all things go well.

According to a report from Football Insider, Leeds United’s 19-year-old French goalkeeper Illan Meslier could be set for a permanent deal if he manages to impress when given his chance later on this season. The report states that whilst the club are hopeful that currency number one Kiko Casilla does not receive a lengthy suspension for his alleged racial slur during a match against Charlton earlier in the season, at least the club have some form of backup plan in place.

Whilst I’m excited about the proposition, given how highly I’ve spoken about him in the past, there is just one thing that creeps into my mind during this kind of talk, and it’s something that could cause problems down the line.

What happens if he turns out to be better than Casilla? Won’t we just find ourselves in the same position that we’ve been in the past couple of months with Patrick Bamford and Eddie Nketiah, where the fanbase demands that the backup be brought in instead?

Admittedly it will be hard to do, as Casilla currently commands the best defence in the league and leads the division in terms of clean sheets, but it’s not out of the realms of possibility.

So it’s a bit of a weird question, but I suppose it needs asking, but do you want Meslier to be better than Casilla? Or just good enough to get by and then hand the reins back over to him when and if his potential suspension is finished.

Can good displays from Meslier potentially dislodge Casilla?

Yes

No

Because if it’s the former, then it could lead to an interesting battle for the number one jersey in the future.
