Leeds United are set to overhaul the goalkeeping situation under Marcelo Bielsa with one in and one out as the majority of fans finally get their Kiko Casilla wish.
Something that’s been an issue ever since we were relegated from the Premier League in 2004 has been being able to call upon a consistent number one for a number of seasons.
Marcelo Bielsa’s management and ability to enhance the playing squad has got the best out of options other managers wouldn’t, but even he couldn’t yield results early in his Leeds tenure with Bailey Peacock-Farrell and then Kiko Casilla struggling.
We’ve struck gold with Illan Meslier though, and now we can boast one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe.
The number one spot isn’t changing any time soon, and rightly so as the youngster continues to boggle the mind with some of his shot-stopping.
That being said, the lack of strength in depth is alarming. Casilla’s howlers and FA charge are something that has seen him lose all faith and his Elland Road place as he joined La Liga outfit Elche on Monday.
It leaves the club with Meslier, and then Elia Caprile and Dani van den Heuvel in the under-23s, meaning there’s the pressing issue of replacing the controversial Spaniard.
At present, bringing up names of potential targets would be mere speculation, but what we do know is that Casilla is going to be swiftly replaced.
The Mirror claimed Victor Orta has already sourced his candidate to take over the second-choice spot at Elland Road, and we know it’s going to be someone young.
A strange choice, given that Meslier isn’t exactly experienced himself, but you’ve got to back Orta in this regard because the Iceman has looked the real deal from day one.
We have no need for someone to come in and usurp Meslier as the starting ‘keeper because there aren’t many in the Premier League who could. However, there needs to be someone dependable that can come in and do the job when required, whether that be someone with a similar career trajectory to Meslier is yet to be seen.
We have a good chance now to rid the club of any doubt when it comes to our goalkeeping options, and you would expect Orta to do that very well, given his recent history in the market with us.
