Having already secured promotion back to the Premier League after a 16 year wait, Leeds United also went into the final clash of the 2019/20 against Charlton Athletic this evening as Championship title holders, and with plenty of celebrations following the Derby County game, we undoubtedly wanted to cap the campaign off with a final win and hopefully, 93 points.
After going more youthful in the last game, manager Marcelo Bielsa clearly wanted to end with the win as we had more experience back again for this one. It served us well.
It was a bright start, plenty of possession and some good chances and Ben White made the first one count on 13 minutes before Stuart Dallas made it comfortable at 2-0 on 28 minutes. Advantage us going into the half time break and Charlton had only had one shot so far, and even that was off target.
Second half Bielsa again showed his genius, as two of his substitutes found the net to make it 4-0. Tyler Roberts scored in 51 after his half time introduction, and Jamie Shackleton hit the fourth in 66.
That was the fat lady singing – 4-0 – Charlton offered little despite getting a few attempts themselves and a thoroughly good end to a decent day and a cracking season.
