Former Leeds United striker Billy Sharp is tipping new head coach Paul Heckingbottom to do well at Elland Road.

Sheffield United striker Sharp ensured Heckingbottom didn`t enjoy a fairytale start on Saturday as he scored both goals for the blades in their 2-1 win against Leeds.

Sharp, who spent just one season at Elland Road netting just five times, feels there has been too much change to the squad in the past few years and he says Heckingbottom will do well if given time.

“It is a good appointment for them,” Sharp told The Sportsman

“He knows the league, having been at Barnsley a while. I am sure he will do well.

“Mind, I saw on the team sheet that Liam Cooper is the longest-serving Leeds player. He signed the same day as me. It is mental.

“They have had ins and outs for the last three years. Far too many. But, hopefully, he gets a chance and will be alright.

“He is a good manager, but I am just glad we beat his team and I was able to score.”

Sharp`s two goals on Saturday saw him go past 200 career goals and he has now scored six times against Leeds in his last seven appearances.
