Former Premier League defender has complete faith in Leeds’ £8m target being a success – Report

He should slot right in.

That’s how one pundit feels about Leeds United and their pursuit of Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara. A report recently came out that Leeds were among a number of clubs who were interested in bringing him in during the January window, with Rangers said to value the midfielder at more than £8m.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League defender Alan Hutton said that he was exactly the kind of player that Leeds United should be targeting and that he should be able to fit perfectly into Marcelo Bielsa’s system:

“That’s a guy that physically demands a lot. Kamara’s a young, fit guy who can get about, really energetic and also get up and down the pitch and I really think that’s the type of player that he looks for. He’s got all the qualities, he ticks all the boxes, it wouldn’t surprise me if something came up in January.”

Hutton is absolutely right here. If you take a dive into his numbers when playing for the Finnish national team, then you can see that he brings a perfect blend of both attack and defence (all stats from WhoScored). He averages 1.5 tackles per game and also brings in 0.9 interceptions a game, and 0.3 blocks. Whilst those numbers might not look as impressive, if you compare that to a current Leeds midfielder in Mateusz Klich, who averages 1.9 tackles per game, 0.5 interceptions and 0.1 blocks you can see that he’s not exactly a million miles away from what Bielsa is asking from his side.

And when you factor in his passing as well, he completes 88.8% of his passes, which would put him second amongst all Leeds’ current players, behind only Adam Forshaw. So in the ‘Bielsaball’ style of wanting to keep hold of the ball, with Leeds currently second in the league when it comes to average possession.

Where do we need to improve in January?

Goalkeeper

Defence

Midfield

Forwards

So it’s clear to see exactly what he’ll be able to bring to the table, and he would certainly act as a pretty significant boost to a side who, as the latest table from Experimental361 shows, are performing well below their expected levels so far this season.
