Former Leeds United midfielder Stephen McPhail has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

He is suffering from an uncommon form of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and he is to undergo three weeks of treatment, for what is called stage one MALT lymphoma.

Luckily for Stephen the cancer was spotted at a very early stage by the Cardiff City medical staff.

McPhail is currently injured after having a thigh operation, after suffering an injury against Nottingham Forest at the start of this month.

The 29 year old is hoping to have recovered from the injury and the treatment in time to start playing again in January.

McPhail joined Leeds in 1995 and came through the clubs youth system and helped the club win the FA Youth Cup in 1997.
Stephen then went on to make 78 appearances for the first team between 1997 and 2004, he`s now at Cardiff City in the Championship.

The Republic of Ireland international is reported to be in good spirits despite the problem and all are best wishes are sent from everyone at Vital Leeds.
