Forget James: Leeds handed mega boost to sign talented 23 y/o in summer – report

|

Leeds United went all guns blazing for Daniel James in January and put their reported interest in Callum O’Dowda to one side, but the Bristol City man could be on the market in the summer, according to the Bristol Post.

O’Dowda was understood to be Marcelo Bielsa’s number two option to improve his flanks last month, but considered James the superior talent and shelved the 23-year-old. Yet Swansea were reluctant to sell and now the winger could sign a new contract at the Liberty Stadium.

The same is not expected of O’Dowda, however, as it is being reported in the Bristol Post that the 15-cap Republic of Ireland international has told the club that he will not sign a new contract.

It is also said that Bristol City will not stand in their player’s way should a Premier League side come in for him, as they would prefer not to sell to a Championship rival, but will seek to cash in on whatever value he retains with a year left on his deal.

O’Dowda would have been a free agent this summer, but the Championship promotion hopefuls were able to activate a one-year extension clause that prevented their four goal, five assist ace from walking away when the season ends.

If Leeds were to return to their interest in the left-midfielder, United will have to show greater intent than some of the Premier League’s current outfits, as the Bristol Post are suggesting that there are a handful of clubs watching developments closely.
