Fabrizio Romano: Direct talks will take place soon for Phillips

|

Manchester City still have Kalvin Phillips on top of their list, as reported by Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

It appears all the rumours are true, Phillips is indeed a wanted man. Particularly by Manchester City. Pep Guardiola has earmarked the England International as his number one target, to replace Fernandinho who has left the club after 9 years at the Etihad.

It has been widely reported over the last week or so Phillips has caught the attention of potential suitors and Manchester City are moving quickly to get talks under way for a possible switch to the blue side of Manchester.

Phillips, 26 is a Leeds youth team graduate who has progressed through the ranks and was a key component of the side that gained promotion to the Premier League. He has numerous England caps and was awarded the 2020/21 men’s Player of the year.

He looks like a perfect replacement for Fernandinho, he is strong and physical, good in the tackle and able to pick out a key pass.  His vision is exceptional and he has a great eye for a long ball or diagonal switch of play.  The only dilemma for Phillips will be game time.  At Leeds he is a guaranteed starter when fit, and this must be on the mind of the midfielder with the World Cup fast approaching.

Manchester City are full of world class players, and Phillips would certainly improve playing with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne week in week out, but will he play every week?  Guardiola has to frequently rotate his stars and I wonder if this would be the right move for Phillips at this moment in time with an eye on the upcoming International Tournament.
