The 24-year old Argentinean, unlike the previous trialists, actually has joined up with the squad and has gained international clearance to take part in Leeds` final Irish Tour match against Shelbourne on Wednesday evening.

Becchio has played for Barca and Mallorca, with last season`s stint at Merida bringing an impressive 28 goals in 50 appearances. Boss Gary McAllister was naturally excited by the opportunity to find what may be a considerably more attractive proposition than Wolves Jay Bothroyd, who may become a target of a Cardiff City hijack anyway.

Speaking to Leedsunited.com the boss said:

‘Luciano Becchio scored a lot of goals last season in the Spanish second division,’ explained the manager.

‘He was brought onto the radar by Marcellino – the former Newcastle and Mallorca defender. He’s a contact Gwyn Williams knows well and we were made aware of him and had a look at him.

‘We’ve got him over for 10 days and he looks exciting, but the most important thing is how he shows in the games.

Exciting times to come at Leeds United, if this bloke cuts mustard like his reputation suggests, the pairing of Becchio and Beckford may well prove to be our promotional expertise!
