One ex-Leeds United keeper is set to replace another one as Aston Villa’s Scott Carson looks set to make his England debut on Friday.

It is believed that Steve McClaren has finally noticed that Paul Robinson is badly lacking in form, and with only David ‘calamity’ James as a potential replacement, the ex-Middlesbrough boss looks set to give Carson the nod in England’s friendly against Austria.

Carson’s professional career started out at the Leeds United academy having impressed at non-league side Workington and he was signed by Leeds in 2002. The Cumbrian-born keeper played juts 3 times for the first team during his time at Elland Road as the signing of Neil Sullivan, following the departure of Paul Robinson for just £1.5million kept him on the bench.

Leeds continued the trend of selling highly talented keepers for peanuts as Carson moved onto Liverpool for just £1million in 2005. 1st team chances at the age of 19 were limited and he soon found himself on his way out of Anfield on loan to Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton in 2006. With Jerzy Dudek departing Liverpool last season, it looked likely that Carson would be returning to be the understudy to Pepe Reina, however Martin O’Neill came in for the stopper with a £2million loan bid to take him to Villa Park for the 2007/08 season.

In November, Carson himself admitted that part of the loan deal included the option for Villa to sign him on a permant deal: ‘I think the clubs have agreed something where, if everyone is happy, my move could be made permanent and it is something I would welcome Carson told the BBC.

‘I would prefer to establish myself as a number one at Villa.’

His impressive performances for Villa this season have led him to leap frog both Rob Green and Chris Kirkland for that 3rd goalkeeper spot in the national side, and now looks ready to stake his claim to become England’s number 1.

Perhaps some day we can keep hold of our natural English talent?
