Former Leeds United manager David O’Leary is being linked with the Republic of Ireland job, vacated by Steve Staunton this week.

O’Leary has been out of work since July 2006 having had his contract terminated by “mutual consent,” the last victim of manager-eater ‘Deadly’ Doug Ellis.

Staunton on the other hand, a former Villa player quit the Ireland post this week following a string of poor results, including a poor 1-1 draw with European powerhouses Cyprus.

O’leary has popped up into the media spotlight doing a bit of punditry again, fuelling speculation that he may be ready to return to management, and that a national-team job may suit him down to the ground. One does wonder however, how he’s going to cope without being able to sign new players?
