All Aboard! The Leeds United Express departing Elland Road for Crewe picks up a passenger as striker Anthony Elding joins the Railwaymen.
When I saw the local newspaper explaining that Crewe boss had kept his foot in the door for Anthony Elding, but needed to sell before he could buy, I held off reporting an article as I fully expected within days, the Leeds United man to be holding the red & white of one of the pluckiest clubs in the entire football league.
As confirmed recently, Anthony Elding has indeed signed on for Crewe Alexandra in a deal thought to be worth approx £300,000. The striker, whose family are avid Leeds fans, has signed a 3-year deal with Crewe, as the heir to the Dario Gradi throne, Steve Holland, looks to build a competitive side following a fair few years of languish, despite their Championship heritage of the early portion of this millennium.
Elding, who looks set to star in his new clubs pre-season friendly against Premier League side Hull City told crewealex.net:
“I have heard stories about Crewe being interested before today, and it is a place I have always wanted to come. For some reason or another it didn’t happen before – but I’m over the moon that it has happened today.
“I am finally here, and now I am looking to get some goals and do well. It is a great club and a great chance for me to show everyone that I am capable of playing in League One.
“I’m not frightened of competition at all, I know all about Nicky, and Calvin. I’ve played against them both and they are both quality strikers and me being added to the side can only be a positive. It is a great opportunity for us all, and maybe play three up front who knows, it’s an exciting time.”
Vital Leeds would like to wish Anthony all the best at his new club, whilst yet worries that if Crewe can strengthen their defence up a little bit, their strike partnership of Elding, Calvin Zola and Nicky Maynard (assuming he stays) could well prove difficult to handle for most League One clubs!
