Leeds United chairman Ken Bates believes that Gary McAllister’s contract extension is for the benefit of the clubs long term future.

Speaking to the official club website Leedsunited.com Bates took time for a cheeky swipe at the departed and long since forgotten Dennis Wise, and hinted at potential big-money spending in the summer.

This is for the long-term future of Leeds,”

“He originally came here until the end of the season, but we’ve been monitoring his progress.

‘This is important in our preparations for next season and we have been impressed with what Gary has done.

“After the poor start which he inherited, we feel he has done well.”

The most interesting statement and the suggestion that money may be available for new players come the summer came at the end of Mr Bates’ comments:

“We have six games left now for the team to prove they are worthy of playing for Gary next season.”
