Young Leeds centre back Charlie Cresswell has today joined Millwall on a season long loan as confirmed by Leeds official via Twitter.

The Preston born 19 year old will leave to get valuable game time in the Championship, a move that has split the fan base.  Some think he should be involved in the first team at Leeds and others believe he would be best suited to playing a full season away in the chance to get minutes and experience under his belt.

The Championship is a tough league, it is long and gruelling, but it would stand the physical defender in good stead for his future.  No doubt playing more minutes than he would be guaranteed under Jesse Marsch this season will vastly help his development.

After only featuring five times last season in the Premier League, the U23 captain knows he is down the pecking order in the defence, with Leeds being well equipped in that department. Robin Koch, Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente and Pascal Stuijk all seem to be ahead of him in the coach’s plans, so it makes sense for him to go out and experience first team football.

The official statement read:

‘Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell has today joined Sky Bet Championship side Millwall on a season-long loan deal.

The 19-year-old centre-back featured five times for the Whites in the Premier League last season and has also been a regular for the Under-23s over the past two seasons, captaining the side.

He will now look to gain further first team experience away from Elland Road, joining Millwall who will be looking to build on last season’s ninth place finish in the second tier.

We wish Charlie good luck during his time at The Den’.
