Club icon fears outside influencer will tempt Leeds ace to quit Elland Road this summer

Leeds are expected to open contract negations with Kemar Roofe imminently, but the delay in discussions has left Noel Whelan fearing the striker’s agent will bend his ear.

Our former striker shared his concerns with Football Insider, who had suggested at the end of May that Roofe is set to demand a four-year contract with a pay rise that will place him in parity with the likes of Patrick Bamford and Kiko Casilla, who earn in excess of £30,000-a-week.

Roofe’s camp allegedly feel a similar wage is nothing short of what the 26-year-old deserves, having ended the recent Championship campaign as our top goalscorer while on the same contract he signed upon his arrival at Elland Road three-years ago.

If talks fail to reach a positive outcome, though, the Walsall-born attacker may have to be sold this summer, to avoid the West Bromwich Albion product seeing out the final year of his contract and leaving the club on a free in 2020. Something Whelan feels is very much a possibility.

“The agent will be whispering in his ear and thinking about the pound signs,” he told Football Insider. “He will be telling him he can double his salary at a new club this summer, or he can see out his contract and get a bumper deal and signing-on fee next year, with Leeds losing out on a £10million transfer fee. That would be terrible business for Leeds.”

On route to the Play-Off Semi-Finals, Roofe scored 15 goals and was credited with two assists – a goal involvement six higher than Bamford.
