Young Leeds United duo Mallik Wilks and Aapo Halme may have a greater opportunity for Championship football next season if speculation linking Barnsley with a double loan swoop proves to be true.

Journalist James Marshment took to social media on Wednesday to break the news, but he did say that fans shouldn’t expect a quick resolution here as Leeds wanted to get their incoming business done first before giving any loan deals the green light for the 2019/20 campaign.

I presume both deals would be season long loan spells and it would be a good step up for attacker Wilks given his successful loan spell out last season at League One level with Doncaster Rovers where the 20-year-old scored 16 times in 48 starts and seven substitute showings.

21-year-old Finnish defender Halme would also certainly benefit from greater first team action as he only boasts two starts with Leeds, with three substitute showings and the return of one goal, but he did impress plenty when he stepped into the breach on occasions in the 2018/19 campaign.

With plenty replying to the Tweet stating that they’d like to see Wilks starring for us next season, it sounds a sensible move to me as he can test himself at this level without us taking the risk that he doesn’t have the impact we’d want after left season’s disappointment.
