Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino has defended his decision to sell Ross McCormack to Fulham saying the striker disrespected him.
The 27-year-old finally ended a summer of speculation by joining Fulham on a four-year contract on Tuesday. The deal is worth a reported £11m and the writing has been on the wall since the beginning of last week when McCormack didn`t fly out to Italy with the rest of the squad for a pre-season training camp as reports suggested that he had handed in a transfer request.
Cellino always stated that he did not intend to sell last season`s leading goalscorer in the Football League but the Italian says it was impossible to keep him after he failed to respect him.
Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post , Cellino said, “I like to be in control of situations but it felt like he wasn`t my player. I was disrespected, he was aggressive with me.
“He didn`t turn up for the tour and all the time he wanted to go from here. It wasn`t in my mind to sell McCormack, it wasn`t my plan, but I had no choice.
“He`s a bloody good player and I`m not going to pretend that he isn`t but he didn`t respect me and it wasn`t possible to keep him.”
The deal that has taken McCormack to Fulham is the biggest transfer fee paid between two clubs outside of the Premier League as well as the highest fee for a Scottish player beating the £9m Sunderland paid Heart of Midlothian for goalkeeper Craig Gordon in 2007.
Cardiff are set to land over £1.5m of the deal after including a 15% sell-on clause when he left the South Wales club to join Leeds in 2010.
