Leeds’ failure to replace Samuel Saiz in the winter was for many United fans one of the key reasons why we failed to secure promotion out of the Championship, as the Spaniard joining Getafe on loan put a greater burden on Pablo Hernandez to create the goals that would secure top-flight football.

Hernandez did all he could and ended the term as our leading creator with twelve assists – the only Whites ace to achieve double figures – but his efforts alone were ultimately not enough, and we are now preparing for another campaign in the second-tier.

With the potential of a return for Saiz beyond unlikely given the circumstances which brought about his loan exit, fans on Reddit have been discussing whether or not the additions of Jack Harrison and Helder Costa, and retention of Jack Clarke on loan from new-side Tottenham Hotspur, will be enough of a difference in another promotion run.

Some have suggested the arrival of Costa, in particular, will have the greatest effect on filling the void Saiz left behind in the winter, as the Portuguese ace can occupy the right-flank slot Hernandez was forced to drift into for the latter half of the season.

Other fans have touted Kemar Roofe as a potential star for the central attacking duties, as well, after Marcelo Bielsa brought the centre-forward into the midfield toward the end of the season with Patrick Bamford taking over the responsibilities of spearheading the attack.

Academy graduate Jamie Shackleton is another player that a few of the Elland Road faithful are keen to see rewarded with a more significant role next season, after the 19-year-old burst out of our youth ranks in August, and went on to feature in 21 second-tier fixtures, assisting two goals last season.

Here is what these Leeds fans have shared in response to the question: “How do we replace Saiz?”
