Marcelo Bielsa has been widely tipped as the favourite to take the vacant managerial position at Leeds United. Yet, can the Argentine manager restore the glory at Elland Road?
Leeds United’s pursuit of Biesla has been apparent for many weeks, and the Peacocks are still hopeful of appointing the 62-year-old. The Argentinian has forged a status within the football world, of being a revolutionary manager, with his innovative tactical inventions. He has inspired some of the greatest names in the sport; the most prominent example is Pep Guardiola. Yet, will Biesla’s unorthodox and inventive style bear fruit in the Championship?
His unique style demands that players are technically proficient, and are equally capable of accomplishing their defensive and attacking responsibilities. Accordingly, this could request considerable investment to ensure that Biesla has the most appropriate players to suit his system.
Furthermore, the Championship is regarded as a physically demanding league, where extraordinary success can be forged by adopting a more traditional style of play, as has been recently epitomised by Cardiff City’s promotion to the Premier League.
That said, Biesla could look to emulate the success that the likes of Wolves and Fulham have achieved, both clubs were highly admired for their expressive and expansive styles of play. Although, it’s unlikely that Leeds will provide Biesla with corresponding financial support.
It’s evident that Leeds United have an opportunity to establish a new identity under the stewardship and the guidance of Biesla. That said, their prospective success will be entirely dependent on their willingness to sign players who are compatible with Biesla’s philosophy. Also, such a dramatic and significant tactical change will take time to come to fruition, a sense of patience will be vital for the club.
If these conditions are established, then Biesla could be the most suitable individual to guide Leeds back into the Premier League.
