Former Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has turned down the opportunity to return to coaching, for a classy reason, as per LeedsLive.

The Whites ex-coach who was relieved of his duties at Elland Road in February 2022, has been out of work ever since. ‘El Loco’ was dismissed as head coach at Leeds after a poor run of performances and some unflattering score lines in the process, which saw the club plummet into the relegation battle. Ultimately it was his stubbornness and reluctance to change his style that cost him his role in West Yorkshire.

Numerous clubs around Europe and indeed the world had been rumoured to be trying to tempt the 67-year-old back into management with the Argentinian seemingly in talks to return to old club Athletic Bilbao but those talks broke down due to a presidential vote going in the opposite direction.

The latest club to show interest in Marcelo Bielsa is River Plate, but the former Leeds boss has rejected an offer to coach them as they are in the same division as his beloved Newells Old Boys and he still has a great fondness for them.

As the article states, ‘Currently River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo has revealed he won’t continue in 2023 with reports in Argentina, claiming former Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis is the favourite for the job. The club had reportedly been in talks with the Leeds boss about taking over the reins.’

‘However, Bielsa said he would not manage a side in the same division as his beloved Newell’s Old Boys. The club’s stadium is named after their former manager and they still have a fond relationship.’

Bielsa said, “I could not manage in a league that has one of its teams whose stadium bears my name.”

Gracias Marcelo.
