Leeds United welcomed Wigan Athletic to Elland Road for today’s Good Friday Championship clash.

Safe in the knowledge that even a draw would hand second spot advantage back our way following Sheffield United’s early kickoff victory, there was everyone reason for confidence in this one given Wigan’s lowly 21st place in the table.

Wigan down to ten men, 36 efforts in total and ten on target – what could go wrong.

Well, they only got two shots between the sticks and ultimately scored from both of them and despite our dominance and control of the game, we just couldn’t break through.

The race for second spot goes down to goal difference now with less than a handful of games remaining in the 2018/19 campaign.

Dust ourselves down, swallow the disappointment and get back on track as they’ll be at least one more twist and turn left given how the campaign has played out so far.

Speaking to the BBC following the final whistle being blown, manager Marcelo Bielsa said of the 90 minutes.

“Any explanation that I could give would be meaningless. It is not a game you could analyse, because you have a game like today’s that you don’t deserve to win – but you have to win. The result condemns seriously my work. If I look for reasons, I have no explanation that could justify a loss like today’s loss. This was a game that we had to win and it was a game that we could win…but we didn’t.”

Got to feel for the gaffer given the choice of words, it clearly shows his frustration.

  • Massive clear out needed for promotion push next season. Too many players have their heads turned by the betting syndicates!
This season is over after this defeat and there is very little difference between last season’s 60 and this seasons 82 points: we’ll be where we are, nailed outside the PL.
Bielsa is a great coach but not a winner and his teams have never won anything and will stay that way for Leeds!

  • It’s about time you placed Izzy Brown, he’s a quality player with Premier League experience so it’s about time you woke up to the fact that games are quickly running out. Must win all last 3 games now and hope Sheff. Utd. slip up some where.

  • I believe Leeds will still gain automatic promotion …..its good we play quickly again on Monday ….We need to be strong and a few Hail Mary’s would help !!

  • He has got to play Izzy brown, they all think they are great players, we need a good striker and a bully in defence

  • That game was atrocious i couldnt believe what i was watching after watching the S/Utd game hoping theyd loose we look 3rd best and on todays performance we are in playoffs again
