Former Leeds United striker and current BBC Radio pundit Noel Whelan has predicted a big season ahead for Academy graduate Mallik Winks following his hugely successful loan spell out with Doncaster Rovers in the 2018/19 campaign.

Having already made his debut for Leeds, the 20-year-old built further on his earlier loan experience, by playing a massive part in their run to the League One Play-Offs which did ultimately end in disappointment for the side.

With 16 goals scored in 55 appearances in total, he also contributed 12 assists whilst mostly occupying the left wing spot and Whelan told Football Insider recently that he felt that he could have a big role to play for us next year, as long as he impresses manager Marcelo Bielsa during the pre-season warm up.

“I’m a big believer that if you send a player out on loan it’s because the manager doesn’t think he’s right for the football club but Wilks, he is an exception because he is a goalscorer. He can play down the middle and on both flanks, and that’s what Bielsa likes. He could be a really good player for Leeds United, Bielsa can make him a star.”

The second tier is obviously a touch harder than League One but Wilks will come back in good confidence, subject to other off pitch issues not getting in the way, and if Bielsa gets the opportunity to include him, with the loan spell being a very good one indeed, we already know the gaffer isn’t afraid to give younger lads their opportunity.
