“Better than Joe Gomez”: Former Leeds man makes stunning claim about Leeds’ 22 y/o ace – Report

|

I’m not too sure if I’m comfortable with all this.

It’s all about getting the balance right at the end of the day. You want to say how good a player is, but given the position that Leeds United are in, it could very well end up backfiring. It’s well known just what the Leeds United fans think of on-loan Brighton defender Ben White, and his performances have managed to ramp up interests from the likes of Liverpool.

And former Leeds United man has said that the 22-year-old defender is good enough to give a couple of them a run for their money. Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan spoke about how his progression won’t just see him take a step to the Premier League, but also to the international stage:

“Ben White is good enough for Liverpool, in my opinion he is better than Joe Gomez. He would give the centre-backs vying to partner Virgil van Dijk a run for their money. There is no doubt Ben White will be an England international sooner rather than later. It’s incredible to think he’d never played in the Premier League or Championship before this season but, deary me, he is brilliant. I’ve seen him every game this season and he’s the best centre-back I’ve seen at Leeds since Rio Ferdinand.”

My only concern about pundits, especially former Leeds United players saying things like this, is that they are really weakening our position when it comes to trying to negotiate with Brighton come the end of the season, assuming that we manage to get promoted.

If someone like White keeps getting these comparisons to players who has made an impact on the England squad then that is only going to drive the price up further and further until we get to a stage where Leeds simply won’t be able to afford to keep him.

Will Leeds be able to keep Ben White beyond next summer?

Yes

No

And then just think how hard it’s going to be to try and find a replacement for him, because a lot of potential targets could be a marked step back for them.
