Loads of Leeds United fans have been reacting on social media, after The Athletic’s Phil Hay distanced the club from signing Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga during the January window.

Recent reports had suggested that Assombalonga was among the attacking candidates being considered at Elland Road, as boss Marcelo Bielsa strives to have another centre-forward to hand before we face Millwall next Tuesday.

Hay has confirmed that Assombalonga was indeed looked at, but doubts that Boro’s six-goal striker will be the one whom Director of Football Victor Orta eventually adds to Bielsa’s squad.

Instead, Hay expects Orta to hit the European market in the final days of the January window to solve our offensive plight, with Patrick Bamford the only recognised senior striker in West Yorkshire after Arsenal recalled Eddie Nketiah.

Would Assombalonga been a good signing?

It is currently unclear as to who Orta’s European striker targets are, while the club continues to harbour an interest in signing Hull City’s star forward Jarrod Bowen.

The financial side of a deal for the Tigers ace makes a move for Bowen unlikely, as the KCOM Stadium natives are opposed to a loan with an obligation to buy, which would be the only way United could finance the 23-year-old’s arrival.

There is also little chance in Watford striker Andre Gray moving to Elland Road this month, as while he was among the forward options discussed, the Hornets are making it challenging for him to leave amid reports of Leeds being priced out of a deal.

In other Leeds United news, the club have once again been knocked back in our pursuits of a potential Eddie Nketiah replacement.
