I simply have to cover this as it seems to have gained some semi-reasonable traction online today – Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is said to be on Atlanta United’s shortlist for their new gaffer.
Sport Witness lean on a report from the Morning Journey and apparently it was only one of a number of outlets to cover the speculation on Tuesday.
Simply put the MLS side are believed to be looking to replace Tata Martino (whoever he might be) at the club despite the fact they have just lifted the MLS Cup and had their winning parade.
They expect an outflux of players and Miguel Almiron is linked with Newcastle United, and Martino is said the be taking on the Mexican national side job. Ergo, Bielsa is on their shortlist to replace him.
Bielsa himself had been linked with the Mexican job as well, and I think that is the driver for this piece of guff as the original invention was padded for effect and to hit a word count. There doesn’t appear to even be a ‘source’ quoted, so it’s toilet paper in my mind.
Given how we are flying high in the Championship, added to the fact there are no rumbles whatsoever that he’s unhappy or looking to move on, there’s more chance of me winning the lottery without buying a ticket this weekend.
Looking around, my initial reaction to this news was echoed by others.
Short answer: no.
